From Rachel Miller – Grow Your Audience
Everyone, literally everyone wears a bumper sticker. We all have something that we describe ourselves with that we want others to think of us with.
We pick clothes to wear because they are from a specific brand,we pick colors to put on our front door wreaths, because they represent sports teams that we support.
The bumper sticker is that message that our audience is saying about themselves.
In this post we’re going to talk about the first impression of your page, the first impression that you can use to speak for your audience.
The three parts that we’re gonna cover that are your first impression are your page name, your profile picture and your cover.
I have a test that I want all of your content to pass. That’s including your name, your profile, your cover, your content, I want this to pass a test.
I want it to pass the blink test, the blink. Literally, the blink, like you blink your eyes. Your audience, they are juggling their kids at the grocery store, they’re checking out the groceries, they’re talking to the cashier, and they’re on Facebook.
Or, maybe they’re watching TV at night, and they’re talking to their spouse or with one of their kids, and they’re on Facebook, okay, they’re on their phones, right, while they’re doing two, three other things.
Knowing that, we need to get crystal clear about who were for and what we’re about if we’re going to be able to capture our reader’s attention and get them hooked. It’s the blink test, okay, typically for something to pass the blink test, it has to be uncluttered, it has to be brief.
So how, how does your page pass the blink test?
#1 – Number one, your name, keep it short and clear. Know who your reader is from that name. Short and clear like a real bumper sticker on someone’s car, that’s two to five words max.
#2 – Number two, with your profile picture, so you’ve got your name, and then you’ve got your profile picture, with your profile picture, is it clear either who you serve or what your product is? Remember to keep your profile picture as uncluttered as possible.
#3 – Next up, your cover, the banner of your page. This is the third piece in the bumper sticker. As always, with the banner, with the cover, you wanna remember the bumper sticker rule. Two to five words max, can we understand it in a blink, a literal blink?
If it was on the back of someone’s car, would we be able to grasp what it is that we’re seeing as we drive by the car? Too much information can confuse your audience. Too many words, too many pictures in a collage, if you have a collage, you might wanna
keep it to three pictures, that way it’s really clear what you’re about and who you’re for, and remember to always, always, check your cover on mobile.
And I suggest that you center your text. Mobile, Androids have a certain size of tablet, there’s tablets have a size, iPhones, and the covers are different on every different device. So there’s no one size fits all for the covers.
Knowing that you’re gonna wanna center what is most important in the middle of your cover. Your name, your profile, your cover, make them clear. Those three parts, guys, the name, profile, cover, those are the first impression that your audience gets with you.
The bumper sticker is not only important for Facebook, it’s important on all of the social media platforms. These strategies work on LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram.
Page Name Tips
Change your page name in stages so your audience has time to adapt, and so Facebook doesn’t think you’re ‘misleading’ people with a name change.
Example: Changing from “Smith & Jones Educational Resources” to”Homeschooling Teens” could require:- Change #1: “Smith & Jones Educational Resources for Homeschooling Teens”
Change #2: “Educational Resources for Homeschooling Teens”
Change #3: “Homeschooling Teens”
Wait at least 10 days between every change request. Sometimes a request for change will still get denied for no reason. You can either appeal (this is often successful) – or try again with something slightly different in 10 days.
